Division Levels, playing up or playing down
Playing Down
If it is felt that a travel player should play down for development reasons, we provide info to ECYSA age group director and they will normally grant an exception.
Playing Up
Playing up is generally discouraged, as maintaining peer groups fosters important dynamics for development. When players grow together, they motivate and lead one another, which enhances their confidence and cohesion. Experience has shown that, rather than leading to greater success, moving up prematurely can hinder confidence, personal growth, and team relationships.
However, if a travel player wishes to compete in an older age group, ECYSA will defer to the recommendations of FYS. FYS policy requires board approval for any exception. This approval is contingent upon the player attending official assessments for the older age group and ranking within the top 20% of that group.
For the In-Town Academy, playing up requires officer or program director approval.
If you have further questions please email the Registrar, In-town Director, or the Director of Soccer Development.
